Traditional Florentine Barchetto Boats: The Living History of the Renaioli on the Arno

While Venice is famous for its black gondolas, Florence has its own unique, deeply historic rivercraft: the traditional Florentine barchetto. For centuries, these sturdy, flat-bottomed wooden vessels were the lifeblood of the city's economy and construction.

1. Who Were the Renaioli?

From the medieval era through the mid-20th century, the renaioli were Florentine laborers who extracted sand (rena) and gravel from the riverbed of the Arno. This river sand was the essential ingredient in the mortar that bound the bricks and stones of Florence's greatest monuments, including the Duomo, Palazzo Pitti, and Palazzo Vecchio.

2. How the Barchetto Works

Because the Arno River has natural variations in depth and seasonal shallow areas, the barchetto was designed with a completely flat wooden bottom. Rather than using oars or noisy combustion engines, the boatman stands at the stern and propels the boat using a long wooden pole (pertica) pressed firmly against the riverbed.

3. Preserving a UNESCO River Heritage

Today, the tradition is maintained by dedicated Florentine boatmen who restore and build these wooden boats using original Renaissance carpentry techniques. Taking a cruise aboard a barchetto is not just sightseeing — it is actively supporting the living heritage of Florence's river culture.
